The crux of the issue. You found it, yes.
See, for some people, it isn’t enough that you give them things, you also have to be someone that they like. A friend, a buddy, someone who agrees with their ideas and their opinions, someone they would have a beer with. Capitalism encourages this. It’s a great way to juice consumption, because people feel like they’re getting more than just a product, they feel like they belong.
So, understandably, when I am not their friend, and when I do not agree with their opinions and thoughts, it feels like a deep betrayal, because as consumers, they feel entitled not only to my content, but also to me–my persona, my time, and my energy.
I mean, we’re still having the same conversation and argument that started all of this, we’re still fighting about Capitalism–it’s just “meta”-stasized . This is Capitalism. This is what it does to you. It turns you into a troll when an author of niche smut doesn’t agree with you.
The sad part, the really awful thing, is they don’t even understand it. They don’t understand why they are so angry at me. They complain about me responding to asks, and the complain by sending me more asks. The problem, see, is that I don’t have to care about them, or their opinions. I’m breaking an unspoken rule of consumerism, and they don’t know how to react. It’s both funny, and terrifying.
